“I once taught English for beer, shots of rum and all the filterless cigarettes that I could smoke in an hour. I sometimes taught it as a favor to my colleagues or because it made me feel like Mother Theresa. I taught English to get into a woman’s pants or because I was in love. I taught it for my dinner, for trips to castle ruins in the Small Carpathians and for five liter demijohns of village slivovica. But most of the time I taught just to see where it would go, who I would meet and how would it all end. And sometimes I even taught for the money.”

Hey Jim, I’ve been reading this book (stumbled upon it while narcissistically googling myself) and I have to say that I really like it. The writing style especially. I’m saving up to go over to Eastern Europe next summer (I’m not a very good saver). Any ‘must-do’s? At least give me the name of some good fermented beverages to try.

    Hey Tony,

Are you some long lost relative? It is hard to find Lukachs in the US. Thanks for the kind words about the book. All the beer is great in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, but for a special treat you need to find some slivovica and borovicka. In Hungary palinka is pretty good (and strong) and in Poland the vodka is very good. Now let me think of my favorite places and I will get back to you. Jim
